The Kumura School Farming Project
A community-led initiative transforming school land into sustainable opportunities for vulnerable learners in Kiambu County, Kenya.
Powered by Kumura Public Primary School and supported by Panda Mbegu.
Kumura School Farming Project
Growing Food, Growing Opportunity, Growing Futures
At Panda Mbegu, we believe that sustainable change begins by planting seeds—both literally and figuratively. Through our partnership with Kumura Public Primary School in Theta Ward, Kiambu County, Kenya, we are supporting a community-led agricultural initiative designed to improve food security, educational outcomes, and the wellbeing of vulnerable learners.

The Opportunity
Kumura Public Primary School is situated along the banks of the Ruiru River, providing access to a reliable water source throughout the year. Despite this advantage, a significant portion of the school’s fertile land remains unused during the dry season due to the lack of irrigation infrastructure.
Recognizing this untapped potential, Panda Mbegu has partnered with the school to support the launch of the Kumura School Farming Project, beginning with the donation of an irrigation water pump that will enable year-round cultivation.
The Vision
Our shared vision is to transform underutilized school land into a productive agricultural project that generates both food and income for the school community.
The project will begin with a pilot phase on half an acre of land, focusing on the cultivation of:
- Tomatoes
- Indigenous vegetables
- Leafy green vegetables
These crops have been selected based on local demand and market opportunities, particularly during the dry season when prices are highest.
Using irrigation from the nearby Ruiru River, the school will be able to maintain production even during periods of low rainfall, creating a sustainable source of income and nutrition.
Beyond Farming: Investing in Children
The project is not simply about growing crops.

Every harvest will help invest in the future of the children attending Kumura Public Primary School.
Income generated from the project will support:
School Lunch Programme
Many learners come from low-income households. Nutritious meals improve concentration, attendance, and academic performance.
School Uniforms
Supporting vulnerable learners with uniforms helps ensure dignity, inclusion, and continued participation in school.
Sanitary Towels for Girls
Access to menstrual hygiene products is essential for keeping girls in school and reducing absenteeism.
The Long-Term Plan
The initial half-acre pilot is only the beginning.
Following a successful first phase, the project aims to expand progressively to three acres, increasing both agricultural production and community impact.
The long-term goal is to create a self-sustaining model that demonstrates how schools can leverage local resources to support education, nutrition, and community development.
How You Can Support
While Panda Mbegu has already supported the project through the provision of an irrigation pump, additional resources are needed to fully launch and sustain the farming initiative.
We are currently seeking support for:
- Land preparation
- Seeds and seedlings
- Organic manure and fertilizers
- Agricultural tools and equipment
- Farmer training and technical support
- Expansion of irrigation infrastructure
Every contribution—large or small—helps us move closer to creating a sustainable future for the children and families of Kumura.
Why This Matters
This project reflects the core values of Panda Mbegu:
Self-reliance. Community empowerment. Sustainable development. Decolonized solutions.
Rather than creating dependency, we invest in local capacity, local knowledge, and local ownership.
Together, we are planting more than crops.
We are planting opportunity, dignity, resilience, and hope.
